Ma On Shan hike
Ma On Shan (馬鞍山) is among my favourite hikes in Hong Kong, so far. A little to the west of Sai Kung, the hike includes the hunchbacks (牛押山), the eponymous peak and the aptly named pyramid hill.
Its not the most challenging hike for sure, less than seven km point to point, only a small section of this can be considered dangerous – though not difficult. Prior to ascending the peak of the hunchbacks, there is a steep climb with nothing to break a fall if one slips. Aside from torrential rain this is not going to be a problem though.
The views from The hunchbacks, the long ridge (or the saddle) and the peak of Ma on Shan are spectacular. To the west of the ridge are several green clad hills and to the north and east Plover Cove and Sai Kung are clearly visible.
As a bonus, you can then ascend pyramid hill, or choose not to, before you reach the Ngong Ping campsites and then the final descent.
It’s a magical climb and if you’re lucky to hike on a clear day with the occasional low hanging cloud, you’re in for a treat.
